Welcome: Using the Library

Librarian Recommendations

As librarians, we have a few recommendations to help you get settled in and make the best of your time at Rush University.

1. Create an account and become familiar with PubMed

PubMed is the free public interface to the database MEDLINE, created by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). PubMed comprises more than 32 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links directly to full-text content. PubMed is widely used in research, don't wait until you have a research project to use PubMed. Explore PubMed and take advantage of the features you gain when you create an account. You can also book an appointment with a librarian to go over the best ways to use PubMed. To book an appointment, check out Librarian Assistance

My NCBI is a free account that PubMed users can create to keep their research organized. Registering for an account through PubMed is easy and free. Once you have created an account, you are able to:

  •  Save search strategies
  • Create collections to save searches or individual records
  • Save search history for up to six months
  • Highlight search terms

Here is where you can find step-by-step instructions on how to create your account: Create a PubMed Account. Also checkout out PubMed guide for more information on how to best use PubMed.

2. Use a Citation Management Tool

There are a few citation management tool in the market, such as RefWorks, Zotero, EndNote and Mendeley. The library provides and supports RefWorks for all Rush affiliates.

In RefWorks, users can:

  • import citations from databases such as PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus. RefWorks provides a centralized holding place for these citations.
  • import PDFs that can then be easily shared and stored
  • create a bibliography of imported citations
  • assist with in-text citations

Here is where you can find step-by-step instructions on how to get started with RefWorks: RefWorks Guide. You can also book an appointment with a librarian to go over setting it up. To book an appointment, check out Librarian Assistance

3. Download LibKey Nomad

LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that provides you with fast, one-click access to scholarly articles. When a scholarly publisher page loads, LibKey Nomad uses the DOI or PMID of the article, compares it to Rush's journal subscriptions. If the article is available, you can download the PDF or view the full-text online. LibKey Nomad is linked to the library's catalog and works across a variety of webpages like, PubMed, Covidence, and even some external pages like Wikipedia. Here is where you can find step-by-step instructions on how to get started: LibKey Nomad
