Borrowing materials via Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan can be used to request PDFs of journal articles and book chapters and physical items which are not available through the I-Share network.

To register as an ILLiad user:

  1. Complete the library's Borrower Registration Form to register (or update your current registration).
  2. Go to ILLiad and log in with your Rush username and password to create your account.

Journal Article and Book Chapter Requests

Journal articles and book chapters are delivered electronically and are free for students, faculty, and staff. Requests may be submitted 24/7 via ILLiad, but are processed during the library's staffed hours. Nearly 80% of requests are filled within 3 business days.

Print Material and Media Requests

Print materials and media requests are free for students, faculty, and staff. Print materials and media are shipped to Rush through the US Postal Service and commercial carriers, and may take up to 2 weeks for delivery.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is Rush's interlibrary loan system. 

How will I receive my materials?

Electronic journal articles and book chapters will be delivered as PDF files to your ILLiad account on the web. Article and chapter PDFs are not delivered by e-mail. but you will receive an e-mail when your requested item is available for download in ILLiad.

Print materials and media must be picked up at and returned to the Library Services Desk (located in suite 571 in the Armour Academic Center).

I am a distance education student. How can I obtain materials?

Distance education students may use ILLiad to request electronic delivery of journal articles and book chapters. We can only offer Interlibrary Loan service for books and other print materials if you are able to pick up and return the material to the Library. Distance education students should make arrangements with their local library to request print books.

Can items borrowed through ILLiad be renewed?

Items borrowed through ILLiad can be renewed at the discretion of and under the terms set by the lending library; there is no universal policy. ILLiad items cannot be renewed online. Contact the Interlibrary Loan Office at to renew materials borrowed through ILLiad or to pay late/lost item fees. Please do not make direct contact with the library that sent the item.
