Zotero

What is Zotero?

Zotero is a citation management system that is popular among students. There is no charge to use Zotero. The library does not have a subscription to Zotero but it is free to use. We highly recommend the desktop version (as opposed to the online version). You can download it here.  We recommend downloading both Zotero and the Zotero Connector.

Zotero allows users to collect, manage and organize research papers and documents.  You can read, annotate, organize, and cite your research as well as collaborate with friends and colleagues by sharing collections, similar to EndNote, Mendeley or RefWorks.

Users can:

  • import citations from databases such as PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus.  Zotero provides a centralized holding place for these citations.
  • import PDFs;  Zotero will read the metadata associated with that PDF to create a citation for it
  • create a bibliography of those imported citations with just two clicks of your mouse
  • assist with in-text citations

Why use the downloaded version?  It allows for these features while the online version does not:

  • in-text citations
  • bulk import from databases
  • locating full text PDFs
  • identify and delete duplicates
  • no storage limit

You can still share Collections with other Zotero users when everyone is using the downloaded version.

You can also sync between the two. In the Desktop version, look for the Sync button in the upper right corner.
