Library Orientation for Residents and Fellows

This guide will provide an overview of how to access the Rush Library resources; how to conduct an effective literature search; and resources available to assist you with identifying journals for publication.

Scopus

You can access the following journal metrics via Scopus:

  • Total citations
  • SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper)
  • SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) indicator
  • H-index (Hirsch index)

Coverage

Scope

  • Articles published since 1996
  • 22,000 publications in science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities
  • Journals published in North and South America, Africa, Australia, Europe, and Asia

Limitations

  • Limited primarily to journals in English

Google Scholar

You can access the following journal metrics via Google Scholar:

  • H-index (Hirsch index)
  • H5-index
  • H-core
  • H5-core
  • H-median
  • H5-median

Coverage

Scope

  • Articles published from 2009 to 2013
  • Articles in journals which published greater than 100 articles between 2009 and 2013

Limitations

  • Small journals (i.e., those that publish fewer than 100 articles in a 5 year span) are not represented
  • Journals whose websites do not comply with Google Scholar's inclusion criteria are not represented (as they cannot be accurately indexed)
  • Limited primarily to journals in English

Ulrich's Periodical Directory

While Ulrich's does not provide actual metrics, it includes comprehensive publication information and reviews which may help authors decide where to publish. This includes:

  • Price
  • Publisher information
  • Index and abstract services in which articles from the journal appear (i.e., Will my article be listed in a well-known database, like PubMed?)

Coverage

Scope

  • Over 300,000 periodicals, including academic/scholarly, peer-reviewed, popular magazines, and newspapers.
  • Over 900 subject areas.

Limitations

  • Primarily covers journals published in the United States
