Welcome: Using the Library

Getting Started

Students are automatically registered as borrowers in advance of their first term, so you do not need to fill out a registration form before requesting or renewing materials. Your borrower registration will be automatically extended for each term in which you are active as a student. To view your pending requests, current loans, and to renew Rush and I-Share materials, visit My Library Card.

Borrowing Books

Rush Library has closed stacks, however all our material can be found through searching our online catalog on the Library Homepage.

Search for books, journals, and other materials available at the Library of Rush University Medical Center and through I-Share, a consortium of 100+ libraries in the state of Illinois. You will be notified by email, usually within 5 business days, when your material is ready for pickup at the Library of Rush University Medical Center's Services Desk (located in suite 571 in the Armour Academic Center). You may also borrow in person from any I-Share library with your student ID. Aside from physical media, we also offer access to hundreds of e-books available online. For more information, check out our Borrowing Guide.

Borrowing materials through the I-Share Network

I-Share is a network of Illinois libraries that open their their collections to borrowing requests from every other member, dramatically expanding the range and quantity of materials available to patrons at participating libraries.

I-Share is a free service offered to Rush University Medical Center students, faculty and staff. Rush users can borrow print materials from other academic and institutional libraries in Illinois by placing a request via our online catalog or by visiting an I-Share library. Generally, most I-Share items are lent under the same terms as items borrowed from Rush, but the lending library determines which items can be requested. Textbooks, materials held in a library's reference or reserve collections or other special collections are usually not requestable. The I-Share service is used to borrow physical materials only; it does not provide access to other institutions' electronic resources or e-books, and cannot be used to request journal articles or book chapters (for journal articles or book chapters, use ILLiad, Rush's interlibrary loan service.

Textbooks and Course Reserves

The Library of Rush University Medical Center has two types of course reserves available. There are two types of course reserves:

  • Print reserves - typically single copies of a required text that can be borrowed for short periods of time

  • Electronic reserves/e-reserves - structured lists of password-protected links to articles or chapters (password is provided by instructor)

Please note, not all classes will have course reserves available. This is something that the faculty member must work with the library to get set up. Check with your instructor if your course has any course reserves set up. For additional information check out our Course Reserves Guide
