Guide to the Basics

A brief overview of the resources available at the Library of Rush University Medical Center

eJournals

RUSH subscribes to over 9,000 academic journals, all of which are available electronically. You can easily read and search within specific journals.  There are two ways to find a specific journal by name:

1) in the big red Primo search box on the library's home page, type in the journal's name.  You'll be brought to a list of resources; the journal should be at the top of the list.

2) on the library home page, click on the word "Research" in the upper left area, then click "eJournals."  You can search by journal name.

Why look for a specific journal?  Aren't all the articles in the databases?

No, every published article is not automatically included in the major databases.  Searching in a specific publication will yield a smaller set of results that is fine-tuned to the subject of the journal.

eBooks

As a RUSH affiliate, you have access to eBooks through many sources.  You can access eBooks by typing the title in the red Primo search box on the library's home page.  If you don't see the book right away, try these tips:

 - use the filters to the right.  Clicking "Resource Type" will allow you to limit your results to "Books."  This includes both electronic and print versions.

 - it may be available only through inter-library loan.  To check if other libraries own a book that we do not, change the drop-down box to "I-Share Libraries."

What about print?

What if I want something in print?  Do you have actual books and magazines?

Yes we do!  Do a search in the red Primo box and  on the next screen, look in the  column to the right for "Resource Type.  You will see that you can limit your results by format to Book or Journal/Magazine.  If the item says it is on location at RUSH, you can request that item and then come into the library to pick it up.  In addition, RUSH belongs to a consortium of academic libraries that allows us to request items for you, if you need something that we do not have on hand.
