Guide to the Basics

A brief overview of the resources available at the Library of Rush University Medical Center

You Found It! Now What?

You've found a great article (or two!).  If the information provided is a citation, not full text, how do you get the full text?   Here are some options.  But first:

  • Make sure you start at the library home page.  That's the best way to ensure access to our subscriptions.
  • Are you in PubMed or another database and you see a green "Get It @ RUSH" button?  Click that, and you should be brought to the full text.

1) To locate a specific article, you can use the red search box on the library home page.

  • Type the title in the red search box on the library home page.  You don't need to change any of the drop-down boxes.
  • Hit the search icon and you will be brought to a page that lists items that potentially match your search.  If you don't see your item, try the search again and this time put the title in quotation marks - that can help you get more exact results.
  • Click the title of the item that you want.
  • Look for the words "Full Text Availability."
  • If we have that item immediately available you will see a list of the publishers who can provide it to you.  Click any of these links and you will be brought to the article.
  • If we do not have immediate access, you can request it via inter-library loan.  If the item is a journal article and you'd like a PDF, click ILLiad.  If it is a book and you want a physical copy, click I-Share.  Either way you will be brought to a page where you can login (or create an account) and request the item.  This is a service that is offered free of charge to RUSH associates.  For more information on interlibrary loan, check out our guide:

2) Do you know the title of the journal that the article is from?  You can often find the full text by looking in the journal that published the article.

  • From the library home page, click the word "Research" in the green bar along the top (upper left area of the webpage)
  • Click on "eJournals"
  • Type in the title of your journal.  You should be brought to a page that lists potential matches; click the title of the one that you want.
  • Look for the words "Full Text Availability" and click on one of the publishers listed here.
  • This will bring you to the journal's webpage, and you can search for your article from here.

Get at Rush - What does this button do?

The "Get It @ RUSH" button is often the easiest way to obtain the full text of an article. Clicking Get It @ RUSH opens a Get It window, which will either connect you to the full text within the library's databases or give you the option to request the article through interlibrary loan.
