Cover ArtWhite Philanthropy by Maribel Morey
Online resource added to the Library of RUSH University Medical Center e-collection April 14, 2025.
ISBN: 9781469664750
Publication Date: 2021-10-20
Since its publication in 1944, many Americans have described Gunnar Myrdal's An American Dilemma as a defining text on U.S. race relations. Here, Maribel Morey confirms with historical evidence what many critics of the book have suspected: An American Dilemma was not commissioned, funded, or written with the goal of challenging white supremacy. Instead, Morey reveals it was commissioned by Carnegie Corporation president Frederick Keppel, and researched and written by Myrdal, with the intent of solidifying white rule over Black people in the United States. Morey details the complex global origins of An American Dilemma, illustrating its links to Carnegie Corporation's funding of social science research meant to help white policymakers in the Anglo-American world address perceived problems in their governance of Black people. Morey also unpacks the text itself, arguing that Myrdal ultimately complemented his funder's intentions for the project by keeping white Americans as his principal audience and guiding them towards a national policy program on Black Americans that would keep intact white domination. Because for Myrdal and Carnegie Corporation alike, international order rested on white Anglo-Americans' continued ability to dominate effectively.

Unlimited copies added to the Library of RUSH University Medical Center e-collection March 28, 2025.

Featured on the New York Times' The Daily podcast and CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS What our failures during the pandemic cost us, and why we must do better The Covid pandemic quickly led to the greatest mobilization of emergency powers in human history. By early April 2020, half the world's population--3.9 billion people--were living under quarantine. People were told not to leave their homes; businesses were shuttered, employees laid off, and schools closed for months or even years. The most devastating pandemic in a century and the policies adopted in response to it upended life as we knew it. In this eye-opening book, Stephen Macedo and Frances Lee examine our pandemic response and pose some provocative questions: Why did we ignore pre-Covid plans for managing a pandemic? Were the voices of reasonable dissent treated fairly? Did we adequately consider the costs and benefits of different policy options? And, aside from vaccines, did the policies adopted work as intended? With In Covid's Wake, Macedo and Lee offer the first comprehensive--and candid--political assessment of how our institutions fared during the pandemic. They describe how, influenced by Wuhan's lockdown, governments departed from their existing pandemic plans. Hard choices were obscured by slogans like "follow the science." Benefits and harms were distributed unfairly. The policies adopted largely benefited the laptop class and left so-called essential workers unprotected; extended school closures hit the least-privileged families the hardest. Science became politicized and dissent was driven to the margins. In the next crisis, Macedo and Lee warn, we must not forget the deepest values of liberal democracy: tolerance and open-mindedness, respect for evidence and its limits, a willingness to entertain uncertainty, and a commitment to telling the whole truth.

Immunofluorescence is a key diagnostic tool in dermatopathology, and essential in the diagnosis of connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and other cutaneous disorders. The need to interpret the results of immunofluorescence testing, and correlate these with histopathological results, is a key skill required not just of dermatopathologists but also, increasingly, of dermatologists who either read the slides themselves or use a pathology lab or academic referral centre. Handbook of Direct Immunofluorescence covers not only day-to-day findings but also less common patterns and rarities, and gives information on important diagnostic pitfalls. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific disease and is introduced by concise text that describes the clinical presentation and pathogenesis: then, multiple images show the range of histopathological and immunofluorescence findings associated with the disease in question. Key points Practical, clinically oriented coverage provides invaluable resource for dermato-, oral and general pathologists, as well as dermatologists Includes invaluable information on technical aspects (specimen procurement, transportation, etc) as well as guidance on interpreting histopathological and immunofluorescence findings Pattern-based approach serves as logical framework for reaching a diagnosis, as well as understanding when to order additional tests and how to recognise nonspecific findings.

Patients seeking fertility care may have experienced trauma prior to their fertility journey and often have experienced trauma as part of the fertility process itself. It is important for medical and administrative professionals that are involved in providing care to fertility patients to understand how to deliver care from a trauma-informed perspective. This is particularly important as the medical evaluation and treatment for fertility patients often involves invasive questions and procedures that can be difficult for patients with a history of trauma. While exposure to trauma has an international impact, this book is focused primarily on the research and experiences of reproductive medicine patients in the United States. It begins with a broad overview of trauma-informed care, and then goes on to focus on specific types of traumas that are likely to impact reproductive patients, including reproductive loss, sexual trauma, medical trauma, trauma perpetrated on individuals due to their sexual orientation or gender expression/identity, racial trauma or discrimination, and paramilitary trauma. The final chapters of the book are tailored to medical professionals, healthcare administrators and mental health professionals with recommendations for how to incorporate trauma-informed care for their specific role in the healthcare team. This text highlights how trauma-informed care principles apply to reproductive medicine and how trauma-informed care can support specific patient populations, such as those with a history of sexual trauma, medical trauma, reproductive loss, and patients that have experienced discrimination due to their sexual orientation, gender identity or race. Trauma-Informed Reproductive Healthcare provides specific recommendations and best practices for medical professionals and administrators in transforming their practice to be trauma-informed.
